Critical theories are required for building up a rational society; says Prof. G Raveendran

In his inaugural speech at the three- day national seminar on ‘media and cultural diversity’ organized by the department of Media studies, Thunchath Ezhuthachan Malayalam University, Prof. G Raveendran (Head, Dept. Media studies, Madras university) said that we need critical theories to form a rational society.  Ours is a feudalistic society promoting casteism; he added.

M. S. Sreekala opined in her key note speech that it is the Savarna Hindu masculinity that holds power in the news room. Representation of Dalit and empathizing with Dalits are two different concepts and the news rooms witness the latter phenomenon; she added. Registrar in charge, Dr. T. Anithakumary presided over the function and head of the department of media studies Dr. Rajiv Mohan and Anto P Cheeroth talked. Prof. G. Raveendran spoke on the methods and tools of culture and sensitivities’ in the afternoon session. He opined that the formation of a culture is from communication and the research on communication should reflect social issues. Vipinchand, S. R. Sarath, M. R. Rajesh, Yedu Nandan , K. Dinu and K. Subitha presented papers in the session chaired by Dr. S. R. Sanjeev.
